I’m not sure if I’m more put off by encouraging the complacency of ritual, or by the calculated manipulation of human nature by a corporate entity.

still here, and still keeping busy with a new project

It’s been a few days since I’ve posted, but that’s okay. I’m working on a new wiki project, which is probably the most monetizable project I can put together with relatively little web development/design work. By monetizable I just mean able to generate ad revenue. I’m not imagining this will make me rich, but I am thinking it will at least cover my internet expenses.

tutorial #3 down: photoshop waveform text effect plus marvin quote

I was bored, so I did a photoshop tutorial. This one was on Adobe Tutorials, called Wave's Text Effect and written by ART-D. Here was his final image:

wave's text effect original image

I learned a lot with this tutorial:

  • Gradients: there was a lot of work with gradients and gradient overlays.
  • Filters:
    • Wave distortions played a prominent role in creating the background, and were very fun to do. I think I'll have to look up some basic physics on waveforms to refresh my memory on waves and get a better grasp at how photoshop is actually distorting things.
    • The text texture was made using two opaque noise layers distorted with the motion blur function, that was pretty neat.
  • Text: Oddly enough, one of my favorite parts of the tutorial was the creation of the text's little inner border by using the Stroke and Inner Glow layer styles, it's a nice touch, I think.
  • Curves Layer Adjustment--Huh?Curves: At one point I used a curve adjustment layer to mess with the contrast, and I'm not really sure what was going on. I'll have to read up on photoshop mechanics to figure out what I was actually doing.

In any case, for my version I used different colors and used the following Marvin the Robot quote (see Douglas Adams, for the uninitiated):

"Life," said Marvin dolefully, "loathe it or ignore it, you can’t like it."

However, I'm not sure which book it's sourced from. I'll find out!

Anyway, here it is, with a link to the high-res version, enjoy!

new project: a personal wedding website, completely designed by moi

Woot! I have “hired” myself to work on a nice big project: a wedding site for my my fiancée and me. This might very well be the first piece of a real design portfolio.

The Framework

The date is set for June 4, 2011, and we want to have a website available for our friends and family. It will mainly be an information repository, with venue and transportation information, things to do that weekend (aside from the wedding!), photos, relationship stories, that sort of thing.
